 BILLY YATES

Billy Yates may be best known as a hit songwriter, having written songs for some of Country Music's best including: GEORGE STRAIT, KENNY CHESNEY, SARA EVANS, JOE NICHOLS, JOHN MICHAEL MONTGOMERY, DAVID ALLAN COE, RICKY VAN SHELTON, RICOCHET, DARYLE SINGLETARY, TRACY LAWRENCE, JEFF BATES, DOUG STONE, OAK RIDGE BOYS and GARY ALLAN, not to mention the GEORGE JONES' classic, "I Don't Need Your Rockin' Chair" and his Grammy-winning smash, "Choices". Billy Yates is also one fine Honky Tonk singer! With five CD's to his credit,  including his latest "That's Why I Run", Yates currently records for his own, M.O.D. (My Own Damn) Record Label and tours Europe extensively where he also dominates the airplay charts there with his smooth honky tonk style of traditional country music.

In addition to being a hit songwriter and singer, the Doniphan, Missouri native also serves as GM/Partner at Smokin' Grapes Music Publishing in Nashville which he co-founded with Scott Hacker two years ago. His day to day responsibilities there include overseeing the careers of 5 other songwriters including Wil Nance, Billy Ryan, David Kroll and singing/writing duo the Broussards.   DAVID KROLL

When you hear David Kroll sing, the first thought that enters your mind is how unique his voice is. The Iowa native has an effortless delivery and a mature tone that is instantly endearing. You won’t hear any forced emotion or self-consciousness from the twenty-two year-old singer/songwriter, just a deep seeded passion that comes from a lifelong love of music.

Piano and classical guitar lessons as a child set Kroll on a musical pilgrimage that continues to this day. By the time he was thirteen, the budding performer had developed a love for country music. Traditionalists like Alan Jackson and George Strait caught the young singer’s ear and helped ignite a burning desire to perform. "I can remember attending an Alan Jackson concert and wanting to be up there so bad," Kroll says.

Kroll has taken giant steps toward becoming a nationally recognized performer. He’s had the opportunity to play on the same bill with the likes of Montgomery Gentry, Trick Pony, Tammy Cochran, Chris Young, and Joe Diffie, and has performed in front of thousands of fans on his own. A chance meeting with Grammy nominated songwriter and country performer Billy Yates lead to a publishing deal with Yates’ Smokin’ Grapes Music Publishing.

With wholesome good looks and a voice and sound contemporary and distinct enough to capture the attention of a fickle public, David Kroll is on the fast track to stardom. For this young singer/songwriter who missed his share of highschool dances and parties because he was out gigging with his band, music isn’t just a hobby, it’s a way of life.

   Randy Houser

"I didn’t know any different” says Randy Houser when asked how he began his journey of music. “There never was a time that I can remember as a kid when I didn’t have something to make music with. Kind of like a toy you never get tired of playing with.” But music would prove to be more than a toy to this soulful Mississippi boy. Randy tells his story best: “After my folks split I grew up with my Mama and sister in Lake, Mississippi. I felt like the man of the house even before I was one. My mother did the best she could to provide for us, we didn’t have a whole lot though. I’d spend a few weeks with my Daddy every summer and Christmas. He’d teach me a new chord or song while I was there.

He lived a few hours away in Biloxi and always made sure that my sister and I stayed hip to good music. Out tastes in music were fairly broad for two kids from a town of less than 500 people. We got a lot of good ole country like Merle Conway, but we were also spoon fed the artists like Bonnie Raitt, Delbert, and B.B. King. Just good soulful music. Thank god for real artists! Of course growing up in Mississippi you hear a lot of blues. I would hang out on weekends at the Subway, a now defunct juke joint, which was located in the basement of the Terminal Hotel in Jackson. Man, those folks were rock’n up in there.”

“I started front’n bands pretty early, about 13 years old. You know every town has to have it’s eight grade rock stars. I began to develop a pretty large following around the area though the High School years and that turned into a scholarship to East Central Community College. I couldn’t believe that my music could actually help me pay for some education. At the end of my second year of school, I put together a band called 10lb. Biscuit. We were very lucky to keep a couple house gigs and packed this little honky tonks three nights a week. One of the bars even had to shut down and double in size to fit all the folks that wanted to come see us! It was just a hell of a lot of fun to be a part of that. Those were pretty wild times.”

“I had been trying to teach myself to write songs for years by this time and about ten years into the process I decided that it was time to see if I could play ball with the big boys in Nashville, Music City. Man, have I sat the bench. Finally, I got my first cut on Trace Adkins’ Songs About Me Album in 2005. A song called “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” inspired by someth’n truly dear to my heart (laughs).”

“For the past couple years I haven’t played with a band or at any clubs because I wanted to concentrate on writing songs that I would want to play and record. But I was really starting to miss play’n live. So recently I have put a band together and am play’n often around town and lov’n it. I can honestly say that it hasn’t been such an easy road to this point. But somehow I’ve managed to keep it out of the ditches this far. I’ll just drive until I run out of gas or breakdown. I’ve surrounded myself with good people and with any luck, I think we can keep this thing running for awhile.

   Thom Shepherd

Thom Shepherd has had quite a couple of years. The St. Louis born singer and songwriter woke up January 1, 2005 to a day of skeet shooting and riding four wheelers on the ruggedly beautiful island of Kodiak, Alaska. The night before he played a New Years show there for the Coast Guard base as part of an Armed Forces Tour, his third for this eager group of folks. In March of 2005 Thom found out that country singer Craig Morgan was going to release his song “Redneck Yacht Club” to country radio. Summer brought Thom’s fourth tour for Armed Forces Entertainment, to eight different countries in Europe. As the months went by, “Redneck Yacht Club” continued to climb the charts, and on a snowy morning in Greenland in October (his fifth AFE tour), Thom got the call that the song had gone to 1. Plans were made and a Number One party was scheduled for late November in Nashville. His parents and his sister’s family even got to come to town for the celebration. Two days after the party, his doctor gave him the news no one wants to hear: you’ve got cancer. It wasn’t his first bout with it. In the fall of 2004 he was diagnosed with cancer, had surgery, and underwent radiation therapy. One year later, when the cancer appeared in his lymph nodes, there was only one choice: nine weeks of chemotherapy. The treatments made him feel awful and work was out of the question. But on his first day back to work in February 2006, a writing appointment with Gary Hannan turned into a four-way cowrite with Phil O’Donnell and Eddie Montgomery. The resulting song, “A Man’s Job” was recorded just two weeks later and ended up on Montgomery Gentry’s album “Some People Change.” He took it as a good sign. As the months passed and he got his strength back, he got back to work with a vengeance, traveling to and performing in Key West, Gulf Shores, Texas, Maryland, and Virginia. In the summer he would go on his sixth AFE tour, this time to Germany. In January of 2007 he completed his seventh tour for AFE, to Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Djibouti, Africa. Thom is a graduate of George Mason University and moved to Nashville in 1993. His song "Riding with Private Malone," recorded by David Ball, went to 1 and won an Achievement Award from the Nashville Songwriters Association, voted on by their members as “the song you wish you had written.” Thom even got to be in the video, playing the title role. His songs have been recorded by George Jones, Montgomery Gentry, Pam Tillis, Buddy Jewell, Joe Nichols, Blake Shelton, Neal McCoy, Kevin Fowler, George Canyon, bluegrass artist Ronnie Bowman, and Cledus T. Judd. Thom’s latest CD, Side Effects, is available at www.cdbaby.com He is also co-owner of Redneck Yacht Club LLC, a company that is developing clothing and accessories for the boating lifestyle. www.redneckyachtclub.com As of June 2007, Thom is one year cancer-free. He continues to write, record and perform.
